Mock Citizen Constitution Convention - Friday, September 11, 2009 at 12:54
The 100-plus delegates who wrote a new "mock" state constitution unveiled their creation this morning at Alabama Constitution Village on Gates Avenue. Over the course of four days in February and June and numerous e-mails in between, the 14-article document was crafted with the backing of the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform, which has worked for years to persuade the Legislature to compose a new governing document. With 800 amendments, Alabama's is the longest in the country, written in 1901 to arguably centralize power in Montgomery and allow for little home rule. Its critics complain it also has a regressive tax structure and racist language. (Eric Schultz/The Huntsville Times)

We are pleased to announce that Clyde Hampton, President of the "Mock Citizen Constitution Convention" and Senior Marketing Manager for American Risk Managers has led the Constitution Convention to the completion of a seven month rewrite of the Alabama State Constitution. The completed work reduced the 800 page state constitution, plus amendments to 26 pages.

According to Hampton, his 105 delegates were divided into 9 work teams. Each team was assigned a specific part of the document to be redrafted. Hampton credits the work of former Alabama Governor Albert Brewer and former Supreme Court Justice Gorman Houston as key leaders in the project's flow and the complete product. The group's work began in February and was completed in August of this year.

The "Mock Citizen Constitution Convention" was sponsored by the Alabama Citizens for Constitution Reform which feels the state legislature has moved closer to allowing the citizens to vote on the establishment of real constitution convention. The hope is that the work completed by Hampton's group will demonstrate the practicality of this type of project.
